Ketamine, ketamine and more ketamine was my diet for a Sunday night full of some good ole techno. I’m not techno’s biggest fan whatsoever, but after the beats I heard that night I’d call myself a techno admirer.
J called me up around 7 p.m. or so and asked me if I was down to come to some rave at McCormick. I was there two nights earlier for Pep Rally, which I must add was the best one in a while. It reminded me of the first Pep Rally I attended 2 years ago. That energy of feeling like the music is hitting the deepest level of your soul was missing for me throughout last year.
I got ready in a decent amount of time and within an hour I was on the 7:45 train headed to Toronto. I have my license but I just hate driving and have no access to a car anymore.
I met up with them at A's place.
Once I got there I was so relaxed from sniffing my poppers in the Uber -- Rush of course. While I was sitting on the couch I was coming up with names in my head for the DJ duo of Hvn and Ardin because they do b2b so much. I don’t know why I was thinking about that but here were 2 names I came up with: ARDVN? HVDR1N? Hmm yeah, I don't know… I just let the idea go. Time went by surprisingly fast and we decided to leave to go catch a ride with our DD for the night, C. I love C so much because they are such an angel and a genuine person. So, whenever I get to see them I’m extremely happy.
At this point we have C, A, J and myself, all shoved in her white van, you know the one with the back doors that slide open and 7 seats. Cozy, spacious, the usual type of space you want to be in before a deranged night... CC was already at the venue while we were at A&W. I got my sweet potato fries and a buddy burger with no caramelized onions. While we were waiting for our food some old white man, who was clearly disturbed, came up to us and asked if we wanted some “flowers' '.
We soon arrived at the warehouse in a matter of 5 minutes. As soon as I walked into the red-lit, tightly packed, one-room rave, I could already tell the energy would be different than what I’m used to. It's not inherently a bad thing, but I have some takeaways. These more predominantly straight crowds can not move like us queers, but they do get down in their own way.
This crowd is a little more territorial of their space and doesn’t like it when you move through the crowd. We got some dirty looks for that. Oh and yes they don't take up the smoker's pit (it was not busy at all like it usually is).
I already know what the McCormick warehouse is like, whether that be a 1 room or 2 room rave (I prefer the 2 room events).
However, I’m always used to familiar people and a different vibe. This is the only proper warehouse close to downtown; it's not really a favourite of mine though. It’s just so out of the way and feels so overused at this point. The drinks are overpriced, they turn the day lights on at the end of the rave and the bathroom situation annoys me so much.
The music was seriously good though. I was informed about Ben Klock by my friends beforehand because I didn’t know who he was. After last night I definitely want to see him spin again. As C said, I was witnessing “WORLD CLASS TECHNO ''. Didn’t remember the names of the other DJs but their sets were cute and I was getting down still.
There was one beat that was played that reminded me of a track I’d heard at Bambi's once. I’m blanking on the exact DJ who spun, but the track was very familiar to me. I know it was at Bambi’s for sure because I remember the night I went. That feeling of my body leaving the ground, floating to heaven, and dancing on a cloud crafted for himself.
THAT’S A FEELING I HAD AT THAT VERY MOMENT.
At one point I was so out of my mind and I felt like the bass had entered me like a man on a good Tuesday night -- a feeling I got while holding on tight to the speaker.
The white overlight and red flashing lights gave me one of the best musical orgasms I’ve had since hyper-heaven in January.
That feeling of being submissive to the beat has always been my favourite. I was techno’s bitch at that very moment.
The lighting was satisfying and complimented the truly climatic beat drops. Which now that I think about it, might have affected the time.
What felt like 5 hours of shaking my ass, whipping around my non-existent ponytail (a signature move of mine) and kissing Ardin a bit, was actually only 2 hours.
It felt like we were living out that one scene from Percy Jackson where they enter the casino and are fed those lotuses, which make them unknowingly high. In my case, it was just the K and infectious beats that locked me in there.
We had the realization and immediately snapped out of it.
It didn’t help that Joseph noticed a buff guy with a pup mask walking by us. I thought to myself “This tall, white, muscular man, dressed In all black was wearing a pup mask”. I complimented the mask later on in the night. It was turning me on quite a bit. Yes, I know that might sound crazy, but if you were there you would have understood what I meant by all of this.
We ended up staying till about 4:30 a.m. but danced a bit in the back because it was too overstimulating at the front. I eventually got to that point where the K was wearing off and I snapped back to reality.
Those 3 hours of dancing were some of the best I’ve had in a long time. We all agreed to go to another techno event soon but not too soon. I don’t think I could do this for another month or so. However, I will remember this night out with J, A, C and CC.
Who knew a Sunday night out could be this fun!
